Musing on….stuff

Well, it’s been way too long since I posted on this, so here I go on something random. Today’s post is about a few games I feel would be great anime.

Soul Blazer (SNES): The plot of the game is relatively simple: you play a servant of God who has to rescue the citizens of the world from the evil boss Deathtoll. The game itself was very solid; the gameplay was similar to Zelda, but more basic. Still, the unique part is that when I refer to citizens, I refer to all creatures of God; humans, of course, but flowers, dogs, cats, if it breathes, you can talk to it. Although the show couldn’t be that long or detailed, it could one of those have good fun shows.

Actraiser (SNES): Another very good game, albeit though it has a similar feel to Soul Blazer. You play an Archangel in charge of protecting the world. You wake up from a nap to your angel companion, who promptly reminds you why you were napping instead of ruling: you lost. The evil Tanzra kicked your ass, and now the world has gone to crap. Fortunately, you have God-like powers, and use them not only to kill demons, but also help the people of the world (who pray to you) to rebuild their lives and create cities. It’s a rather fun combination of basic action and simcity games. Although the game has many areas, an anime could center around one town and its rebirth. Make the main character have no memory (which he did in the game), and see how he does as a God. Either way, if done right, it could be a great show displaying how hard it is to be God, while having nice action scenes.

Alundra (PS): Ok, so maybe it’s a Zelda ripoff gamewise (ok, a big ripoff), but you gotta admit, the story was nice, if depressing. In the game, you play Alundra, an elf who has the unique powers to enter people’s dreams. And guess what? There’s an evil force entering people’s dreams and making them not wake. It’s up to Alundra to help them. The great thing though is that there’s a lot to the story than just entering dreams (which by itself would be interesting), a lot of intrigue to it. Alundra would definitely make a good anime (and hey, even the makers knew it; the ending and opening was anime esque.)

Final Fantasy 2 and 3: Both of these games are amazing, among the best RPG’s of all time; with memorable characters, great stories, and battles, both of these could easily do 52 episodes and simply be great. And who doesn’t want to see these characters again?

Suikoden Series (Excluding IV): Ok, this is biased, as I love this series, but this could make a great show. Again, it has great characters and solid stories (very good ones in II and V). Suikoden V would be the easiest to make an anime, (again, IV is just terrible), as the story of the Prince of Falena would be good to say; action, poltics, comedy, story, great characters, what more do you want? Granted, trying to put all 108 stars would be a great challenge, but I feel the epicness can be kept.

In general, RPGs are easier and better to make into anime, and that’s what my list mostly has. After all, a good anime needs to have either a great story or great characters; RPGs are the same way.
